Everyone has heard of the relaxation and reward responses but we may be less familiar with the social grooming response. The social grooming response -e.g. light therapeutic touch, satisfies a sense of belonging and being cared for. It also induces the release of oxytocin, which makes us feel safe and connected to others.

The science behind social grooming tells us that it’s a distinct category of tactile experiences with possible functional roles in fostering a connection to others. Interestingly, vibroacoustic therapies and sounds also stimulate pleasant body sensations similar to therapeutic touch. This may prove very therapeutic for those with ASD or any sensory processing issues as specialized CT sensory nerve fibers that are stimulated by the sounds send a signal to the emotional brain about our sense of self and safety. This offers a safe experience that is simulated via sounds that are “felt” via the sensory nervous system e.g. meditation bowls, raindrops, water, and massage sounds.
